Shingles Vaccine

Get your free Shingles Vaccine here at Piritahi Hau Ora, if you are aged between 65-80 years old.

Shingles can appear as an unsightly, blistering rash, more often on your face or torso. Whilst the rash can look terrible it is the pain that most sufferers remember. This can last for months or even years after the rash has gone. Shingles is caused by the Chickenpox virus; 97% of New Zealand adults have had chickenpox, so if you have had chickenpox you are a carrier for the virus that causes Shingles. That is because the virus does not leave your body, it will stay in your nervous system and can re-emerge at any time as Shingles.

Around one in three people will get Shingles in their lifetime. Shingles is more common in older people because when you’re young your immune system is usually strong enough to keep the virus in check. But as you age it is easier for Shingles to beat your immune system’s defences. Shingles can be more severe the older you get.

A single dose of the ZOSTAVAX vaccine reduces the risk of developing Shingles and it’s associated short and long term pain. This is free for adults aged 65-80 years old.

You should not get ZOSTAVAX if you:

  • are allergic to any of its ingredients. This includes allergies to gelatin or neomycin.
  • have a weakened immune system.
  • have active TB (tuberculosis) that is not being treated.
  • are pregnant.

If you’re unsure please discuss with your doctor, nurse or vaccinating pharmacist.
